John Hartom is an artist, educator and community activist living in western North Carolina. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Michigan in 1970 and a Masters of Art Education Degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1976. He spent 29 years as a high school art educator. He has been a food justice advocate since 1990 when he co-founded The Empty Bowls Project.

His current studio work is an exploration of color and pattern using mixed media to create paintings and monoprints. These works are used to create individual works for the wall, multiple pieces exhibited together for sculptural effect, and for both the covers and interior parts of hand-crafted books. He strives to create objects that are
well-crafted and energetic.
